Legally, you can in a lot of states now. However, 5.56 x 45 is far from ideal for large game.

Mine’s a 50's era Mossberg 195K-A bolt action 12ga. I picked this one up dirt cheap while shopping for a pump action. I fell in love with the thing. Check out the adjustable choke and the clip. Most people are surprised it’s not a rifle. All I have at the moment is this and a Mauser

What do the cuts in the barrel do?

Ported barrels are supposed to reduce recoil by expelling the gasses before the shot exits the barrel, but I’m not so sure it makes much difference in a gun like mine. It was factory ported.

I have the same Tikka T3 in 7mm-08 (the deer are small down here) with a Zeiss Terra.

On a shotgun it can help clear/separate the wadding for more consistent patterns

Here are most of my toys
Springfield A1 .30-06 that has been sporterized. Got it from my grandfather for my 21st birthday. He has been hunting with it for most his life.
Two Arisaka Type 99s. These I also inherited from my grandfather. They sat in a closet for years. I recently cleaned them and fired them. Shot great. and lots of fun.
Beretta 92FS. The first handgun I bought myself. My requirements were 9mm and full metal frame and slide. It was between this and a CZ 75. I ended up liking the feel of the 92 in my hand more than the 75. Been great so far.
Not pictured is my Remington 870 12 gauge. I also got that from my grandfather. Its the older, more reliable model. Great for clay pigeons.
Also not pictured in my Mosin Nagant 91/30 surplus gun. That was the first gun I owned and bought. Went to Big 5 the day the sale on them happened (saw in their mail flyer). I got there and they didn’t even have them off the pallet. I got to pick mine. Best $125 I ever spent.

My pride and joy Springfield .30-06 that has been sporterized. Was my grandfather’s hunting rifle for ever. I got it for my 21st birthday.
Along with that I have a Mosin Nagant 91/30, 2 Arisaka Type 99s, Remington 870 12ga, and a 92fs.
But the .30-06 is my favorite. She will never leave my side.
